How does patina occur?
Light grey colored patina, which its occurring speed changes with the gases that is in the air that it touches, and climate and location of the building, occurs within 6 months to 2 years. Patina, which is in the surface of the zinc, is a natural reaction as opposed to the main elements in the atmosphere, and there is also water involved with it. It occurs in two phases:
– Zinc in touch with water (damp, H2O) reacts with oxygen, and in the surface “zinc hydroxide” layer occurs.
– Zinc hydroxide reacts with the carbon dioxide (CO2) which in the air, and patina itself create “hydroxy carbonate” layer.Patina is tightly attached to the zinc, its layer is natural and strong, it is insoluble in water. For this reason, it protects zinc and slows the interaction of the substances contained in the air in the atmosphere.
Long life Zinc is naturally resistant to corrosion, also it protects itself by developing patina that provides an extreme longevity. Depending on the atmospheric abrasion of 1 µm/year, 0,70 mm thick rolled zinc lives in minimum conditions 70 years and 120 years depending on the environment. It is considered as material of the future due to long lifetime and not needing maintenance and repair.

Minimum maintenance
ÇATISAN includes systems that protects the building the best possible way for the atmospheric conditions like rain, sun and wind. Due to its long life, titanium zinc (titanium and copper alloyed zinc) is a material that requires very little maintenance. All the products that Çatısan used are natural, it does not require maintenance after properly installed in worksite as there is no paint or lac coating for repeated maintenance. During its lifetime, because of the patina occurring continues in all surfaces, zinc will repair itself and scratches will self covered. The only maintenance that can be performed is cleaning the accumulated leaves and mud in the areas that rain cannot clean.

Easy to process
Rolled zinc is easily adaptable to the structure because it is applicable to the small diameter difficult folds. It can be shaped in the difficult shapes, that with the other products it is impossible or hard to apply, conical, convex, concave and the other complex shapes. Acoustic performance
It provides sound isolation for air-born noises (vehicle traffic, planes etc.). Zinc also has better acoustic performance in the sounds that are occurred as a result of a hit such as rain, compared to the more strong alloys (aluminum, steel, plastic etc.).

Zinc is not toxic, it is natural, durable and in harmony with the nature. The production of titanium zinc is made by according to the ISO 14025 and LEED criteria. Titanium zinc is nature friendly, even rainwater can be stored and reused, and its production and installation does not harm the environment. As well as zinc is abundant in nature, it can 100% recyclable. Compared to other metals, it melts in very low temperatures and this way provides high level sustainability with energy savings.
